Clagg: Lord of the deep

04/05/11  ||  Khlysty

I’m in a foul mood these days. My country’s going towards insolvency real fast. People around me are scared and angry; hell, I’m scared and angry. I’m working like a dog and the job demands get more and more awry with each passing day. The arm that I broke on December still hurts like fuck. You see where I’m getting at, right? I’m in the perfect mood to review some crazy doom’n’gloom shit and Clagg’s “Lord Of The Deep” seems perfect for the occasion.

So, Clagg. They come from Australia, the land of Foster’s and XXXX Castlemaine and DaveDeath, who’s older ‘n me, which is kind of a relief. Clagg plays sludge/doom of exquisite quality. That is, they have the chops and the amps to slowly pulverize the listener, while making a few strategically-placed detours into Isis-esque post-metallisms and stoner’s warm fuzziness to ensure that those who stay for the elephantine-length songs won’t lose patience easily. Otherwise, it’s business as usual for them Aussie bruisers: the guitars are all-out-fuck heavy, the drumming is caveman-hitting-the-skins effective –and some times even a bit groovy- and the vocals are a doubletracked tortured growl-scream that can easily wither plants and dainty souls alike.

As I said before, the tracks are quite long (ranging from 7 to 16 minutes) and their heavier than that third and fourth stone plaques that fell upon Moses’ foot and broke, when he was returning from his chitty-chat with you-know-who. The riffs are blue whale-class heavosity and the slow oppressive nature of the music sounds perfect through a raw and effective production job. But the band knows how to insert these little kinks I told ya ‘bout a bit before, so there’s a sense of constant flow –slow, yes, and tarry and filthy, but flow- to the songs. Look, I’m gonna go down to the matter at hand and tell ya that “Lord Of The Deep” is extremely listenable for what it is. So, if you like your slow-and-low music heavy as fuck, but displaying a certain amount of intelligence, Clagg is easily a delectable piece of metal.
